"Gerdemann & Co's brickyard list 1 km west from Gronau in Westphalia. The large, about 30 m deep outcrop, contains argillaceous slate of the Upper Wealden and the Valanginian. For a long time the brickwork outcrop has been known as a source of fossil vertebrates. Hosius mentions Gronau in the above-mentioned work as the source of an Iguanodon clavicula. The fossil is in the Münster Museum and is the distal part of the humerus or femur of a plesiosauroid of considerable size..." Discoveries came from large quarry or chain of quarries, but locality data is imprecise. Most collections likely came from the "Heslacher Wand" cliff face at the mouth of the Nesnbach Valley to the east of Heslach. This large outcrop runs today for more than 200 metres from northwest to southeast (see Hungerbühler 1998: 380–383). Gauß-Krüger coordinates given by Hungerbühler (1998) are R 351058 H 540260. Note that this is distinct from the "Billert" quarry near Heslach that yielded abundant material of Aetosaurus. Note also that some of the specimens included here were listed by Hungerbühler (1998) as "Heslach or Kaltental". On the middle level of a limestone quarry, at ca. 300 m altitude. The fossil-bearing site belongs to a NW-SE striking fault, which is exposed within the quarry. The sedimentary infill of the sinkhole has been opened up by quarry operations at 300 m and 290 m above sea level, respectively, about 15 to 25 m below the original ground level before limestone quarrying began. Three horizontal outcrops of refilled karst cavities can be observed at the 290 m level. The largest has a nearly circular shape of about 30 × 35 m (Lanser and Heimhofer 2013).
"The quarry discussed here is located in Balve-Beckum, in the area of the Remscheid-Altena Anticline...Three horizontal cuts of infilled cavities are known from the 290 m above MSL. The largest has an approximately circular shape of 30 by 35 m (“Balve I”, Lanser & Heimhofer 2013), a second one is also circular with a diameter of ca. 8 m (“Balve III”), and a third is more elongate, 4 m wide and more than 10 m long (“Balve II”)."
