Étymologie Le nom de ce dinosaure fait référence à un important personnage de la culture roumaine. Dans l’antiquité, Zalmoxes (ou Zalmoxis) était le nom d’un esclave de Pythagore qui après avoir été libéré, s’est rendu en Dacie (qui correspond en grande partie à l’actuelle Roumanie) et est devenu un professeur, guérisseur, végétarien et grand prêtre. Plus tard il fut divinisé par les Daces comme un dieu du mystère et de l’extase, des mondes souterrains et de l’immortalité. Il fut à l’origine d’un mouvement religieux a

Zalmoxes est un genre fossile de dinosaures ornithopodes proche des iguanodons, ayant vécu en Roumanie tout à la fin de Crétacé, au Maastrichtien, soit il y a environ entre 72,2 à 66,0 millions d'années. Il fut d'abord associé au genre Iguanodon, mais placé ensuite avec les Rhabdodon au sein de la famille des Rhabdodontidae.
