Remarkable Fossil Reveals the Diet of a Late Jurassic Ichthyosaur
Aegirosaurus fossil Germany Ichthyosauria Jabalisaurus +4
Scientists studying the newly described ichthyosaur Jabalisaurus tethyensis have gained a remarkable insight into its diet. A beautifully preserved fossil from southern Germany contains evidence of the animal's last meals. In addition, the specimen preserves important details of the skeleton and body outline. The fossil, specimen number JME-SOS-08369, was previously assigned to Aegirosaurus. However, researchers

A New Late Jurassic Ichthyosaur from the German Plattenkalk Deposits
Aegirosaurus fossil Germany Ichthyosauria Jabalisaurus +4
Scientists have described a new species of Jurassic ichthyosaur from southern Germany. The new species named Jabalisaurus tethyensis, lived around 149 million years ago during the Late Jurassic (Tithonian faunal stage). Remarkably, some fossils assigned to Jabalisaurus tethyensis had previously been classified as Aegirosaurus. The research highlights the hidden diversity of ichthyosaurs in the famous

Earliest Synapsid Cloaca Revealed by 294-Million-Year-Old Fossil
discovery evolution fossil Germany mammals +1
A remarkable trace fossil from Germany has provided the oldest known evidence of a cloaca in the mammalian lineage. The discovery helps palaeontologists better understand the evolution of early terrestrial vertebrates and fills an important gap in the fossil record. The fossil comes from the famous Bromacker fossil locality in Thuringia (Germany). Among footprints and

Torvosaurus: Beast of the Week
bone Dinosauria Germany Jurassic Late Jurassic +4
Today we are going to look at a huge Jurassic predatory dinosaur, Torvosaurus tanneri!  Torvosaurus lived about 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period. Its bones have been unearthed in Colorado, USA, Portugal, and possibly Germany (Europe and North America were not as vastly separated back then, remember, so a lot of the dinosaurs on each of them from that time shared recent ancestors).  From nose to tail it measured up to 36 feet (about 11m) and would have been among the largest,

Anurognathus: Beast of the Week
Anurognathus Germany Jurassic Late Jurassic Pterosauria +1
This week we will be checking out a unique little pterosaur, Anurognathus ammoni!  Anurognathus lived in what is now Germany during the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago.  It was tiny, sporting a 14 inch (35.5 cm) wingspan, and would have likely eaten insects.  It's genus name translates to "Frog Jaw" since its skull was similar looking to a frog's, being extremely blunt with a wide mouth.  Watercolor reconstruction of Anurognathus ammoni by Christopher DiPiazza.Anurognathus' sku
