Sauropterygia

(Owen 1859)

Les Sauropterygia, ou sauroptérygiens, forment un super-ordre fossile de sauropsides marins divers qui s'est développé à partir d'ancêtres terrestres peu de temps après l'extinction du Permien et a prospéré pendant le Trias avant que tous, à l'exception des plésiosaures, ne se soient éteints à la fin de cette période. Les plésiosaures continueraient à se diversifier jusqu'à la fin du Mésozoïque. Les sauroptérygiens se caractérisent par une adaptation radicale de leur ceinture pectorale, adaptée pour supporter de puissants coups de nageoires. Certains sauroptérygiens plus tardifs, tels que les célèbres pliosaures, ont développé un mécanisme similaire dans leur bassin.
